Mustangs of Las Colinas Sculpture Introduction:

This outdoor bronze horse sculpture is the famous Mustangs of Las Colinas sculpture. Artist Robert Glenn designed this sculpture group. The original work is at Wouldiams Plaza Las Colinas in Irving, Texas. It depicts a group of 9 wild horses, they are 1.5 times the size of real horses, and they cross the waterway. The Las Colinas horse fountain produces the effect of horses’ hoof splashing water. This group of sculptures is very attractive and looks magnificent, is the largest equestrian statue in the world.

History Background:

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Dallas businessman Ben H. Carpenter undertook the task of transforming his family ranch into a world-class residential and commercial development called “Las Colinas.” To reflect the state’s natural, untamed past, Carpenter commissioned a sculpture larger than a real person, depicting a group of wild horses running through a stream. So in 1976, Carpenter approached African wildlife artist Robert Glen, hoping to turn his vision into reality.

Glenn spent a year studying the history of wild horses, and in southern Spain, he found a horse of the same pedigree as the horse brought to the United States by the Spaniards centuries ago. He used these horses as models for his sculptures. After the mold is made, it is sent to the foundry for casting. The foundry completed the bronze casting in November 1981. It was put into use on September 25, 1984.

Production Process:

The general process of making the Las Colinas horse sculpture is as follows:
First, make clay models of each horse to determine the design and details of the sculpture.
Then, the lost wax method is used for casting. The lost wax method could ensure the fine detail of the sculpture. During the casting process, we would repair the wax mold many times to ensure that no details were lost during the casting process.
