Auguste Rodin’s “The Kiss” is one of the most representative sculptures of the late 19th century, reflecting his profound and delicate expression of human emotions.
The Kiss was originally conceived as part of Rodin’s large-scale sculpture “The Gates of Hell”, showing the tragic love story of the lovers Francesca and Paolo. According to legend, the two kissed for the first time when they were reading the legend of King Arthur, and were subsequently discovered and killed by Francesca’s husband (also Paul’s brother).
Although this plot did not end up appearing in The Gates of Hell, Rodin decided to separate it into a separate work.
