The original Bernini David sculpture was commissioned by Bishop Scipione Borghese and took eight months to complete from 1623 to 1624. Unlike previous marble David sculptures, this work interacts with the surrounding environment and shows not the victory scene after the battle but the preparation before the battle. It is a pioneering work of Baroque sculpture and has also opened up new horizons in implying movement and psychological strength.
In the sculpture, David is dressed as a shepherd, standing sideways, with a bag for wrapping stones hanging around his waist, with his hands behind his back, he ties the stone with a rope. Frowning, his mouth tightly closed, his feet standing one after the other, aiming at the target and preparing to throw stones at the giant Goliath.
There is also a piece of cloth around his waist that specifically covers the private parts of his body and hangs down to the ground. At his feet are the armor given by the King of Israel and the harp that represents David as a talented harpist.
