This life-size, hand-carved natural marble Mary and Christ sculpture depicts Saint Veronica wiping the blood off Christ’s face with her veil.
Saint Veronica was a widow in Jerusalem in the 1st century AD and is considered a saint in many Christian countries. Legend has it that Veronica saw Jesus carrying the cross on his back and walked to Calvary. She felt sympathy and gave her veil to Christ to wipe the blood off his forehead. When Christ returned the veil, his face was miraculously imprinted on it.
The Mary and Christ statue is very detailed, with Christ’s painful facial expression, muscles, and clothes all very realistic.
